Landleben An der Donau
Auf einer Strecke von rund 350 Kilometern durchquert die Donau Österreich und prägt seit Jahrhunderten das Leben der Menschen entlang ihrer Ufer. Für viele ist der Strom bis heute Lebensgrundlage und Arbeitsplatz zugleich.
Die ORF III-Neuproduktion begleitet den Donaufischer Franz Wiesmayr, der noch immer vom Fischfang in der Donau lebt, sowie die Bootsbauerfamilie Witti, die traditionelle Zillen in aufwendiger Handarbeit fertigt. Darüber hinaus besucht die Dokumentation den Musikverein Persenbeug bei den Vorbereitungen auf das nächste Volksfest und begegnet Menschen, die altes Wissen und selten gewordene Handwerke bewahren – darunter ein Besenmacher und eine Zwirnkopfmacherin.
Entlang der Donau entsteht so das vielschichtige Porträt einer Region, in der Traditionen, Handwerkskunst und Gemeinschaft bis heute lebendig geblieben sind.

Along the Danube
Flowing for approximately 350 kilometers through Austria, the Danube has shaped the lives of the people along its banks for centuries. Even today, the river remains both a livelihood and a way of life for many communities.
This new ORF III documentary follows Danube fisherman Franz Wiesmayr, who still earns his living from the river, and the Witti family, traditional boat builders who continue to craft wooden flat-bottomed boats by hand using time-honored techniques. The film also visits the Persenbeug brass band as its members prepare for a local folk festival and meets people who keep rare traditions and traditional crafts alive, including a broom maker and a maker of decorative yarn headdresses.
Together, these stories create a rich portrait of a region where craftsmanship, tradition and community continue to thrive along one of Europe’s great rivers.
