The Living Cathedral – St. Stephen’s and Its Animal Inhabitants

Not only is St. Stephen’s Cathedral a house of God, it is also home to a remarkable variety of animals.

Cathedral priest Toni Faber pays special attention to Vienna’s pets and each year, around the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, hosts a ceremonial blessing of animals on Stephansplatz.

Animals are generally not permitted inside the cathedral itself. The only exception is guide dogs and assistance dogs, which are allowed entry with special authorization. Beyond domestic animals, a diverse range of wildlife inhabits the cathedral and its surroundings: falcons nest on the towers, mice live within the vaults, and on the roof, fifth-generation beekeeper Peter Stich tends several beehives.

In this ORF III production, Wolfgang Niedermair explores how St. Stephen’s Cathedral – whose architectural and sculptural ornamentation draws heavily on motifs from the animal kingdom – has become a habitat for numerous living creatures. The film highlights the fascinating relationship between sacred architecture, nature, and the living world of creation.
