Wie selbstverständlich steht der Stephansdom heute vor uns als eines der großen Wiener Wahrzeichen. Doch wie leicht hätte es anders kommen können?
Der Wiederaufbau nach der Zerstörung im April 1945 war nämlich keineswegs eine ausgemachte Sache, wie sich bei näherem Hinsehen zeigt. Die gotische Statik war durch das Fehlen des abgebrannten Dachstuhls schwer aus dem Gleichgewicht. Ein halbes Jahr lang kämpfte der Bautrupp gegen den fortschreitenden Einsturz des Domes. Die beschädigten Innenpfeiler hielten dem Druck kaum mehr Stand. Und der Bauschutt im Kirchenschiff drohte in die Katakomben durchzubrechen. Beides hätte den Dom irreparabel beschädigen können.
Außerdem hielt man es zunächst für ungebührlich, angesichts der vielen ausgebombten Wohnhäuser ausgerechnet eine Kirche neu aufzubauen. Und zuletzt ging dem Dom das Geld aus. Wie viel hätte gefehlt, und der Stephansdom hätte nicht wiederaufgebaut werden können? Wäre der Dom so geendet wie die Dresdner Frauenkirche, die ein halbes Jahrhundert lang als Ruine ein Mahnmal gegen den Krieg bildete?
Dombaumeister Wolfgang Zehetner will es wissen und geht der Sache nach. Mit ihm gemeinsam zeigen die beiden Regisseure Manfred Corrine und Wolfgang Niedermair, wie verschlungen der Weg zum neu errichteten Stephansdom wirklich war.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is one of Vienna’s most iconic landmarks. It seems though – by pure coincidence. This is the story, about how easily things could have turned out differently.
The reconstruction of the cathedral after its destruction in April 1945 was by no means a foregone conclusion, as a closer look reveals. With the roof structure having burned away, the Gothic building’s structural balance was severely compromised. For six months, the reconstruction team fought against the cathedral’s ongoing collapse. The damaged interior pillars could barely withstand the pressure any longer, while the debris filling the nave threatened to break through into the catacombs. Either of these developments could have caused irreparable damage to the cathedral.
Moreover, many people initially considered it inappropriate to rebuild a church while countless residential buildings lay in ruins after the war. Finally, the cathedral project also ran out of money. How much more would have been needed before reconstruction became impossible? Would St. Stephen’s Cathedral have met the same fate as the Frauenkirche in Dresden, which remained a ruin for half a century as a memorial against war?
Cathedral Master Builder Wolfgang Zehetner set out to find the answers. Together with directors Manfred Corrine and Wolfgang Niedermair, he traces the complex and winding path that ultimately led to the reconstruction of St. Stephen’s Cathedral and reveals just how uncertain its survival truly was.
