Alpine Life in the Karwendel Mountains

Many parts of the Karwendel are accessible only during the warmer months of the year. Home to peaks rising above 2,700 meters, this impressive mountain range offers the perfect setting for anyone seeking the unique atmosphere of a high-alpine summer.

In this new installment of the Homeland Austria series, director Dominik Walser visits some of the region’s characteristic residents and explores their way of life in one of Austria’s most spectacular alpine landscapes.

Among them is farmer Maria Gapp, whose family has owned the historic Gapp Farm for 380 years. Working days often last up to sixteen hours, and she manages the farm largely on her own, relying on additional help only during the hay harvest.

The folk musicians Seppi Moser and his group “Schönjocha” are united by their passion for music, local traditions, and their homeland. For them, music provides a welcome escape from the fast pace and noise of modern everyday life.

Mountain farmer Martin Rieser spends every summer bringing his cattle to the Kaserstattalm, high above Achensee. To ensure the well-being of his animals, no effort is too great. Clearing encroaching vegetation to preserve alpine pastures, providing regular salt supplements, and carrying out countless other tasks are all part of the responsibilities of a dedicated cattle breeder.

Through the stories of these men and women, the documentary paints a vivid portrait of life in the Karwendel Mountains—a world shaped by hard work, deep-rooted traditions, and a profound connection to the alpine environment.
